That pairing is why glycinate has the reputation of being the "relaxing" magnesium and why it is the least likely common form to send you to the bathroom. It runs about 14% elemental magnesium by weight, so you need a slightly larger or extra capsule to hit the same dose as citrate. It is almost always sold as capsules or a flavored powder.
Magnesium citrate: bonded to citric acid
Citrate is magnesium bound to citric acid — the same acid your cells use in energy metabolism. It is cheap, dissolves easily (which is why it is common as a powder), and runs a touch higher at around 16% elemental magnesium. Its defining trait is osmotic: citrate pulls water into the intestine, which softens stool and gets things moving. That is a feature if you want regularity and a nuisance if you don't.
Absorption: does glycinate really win? (No — here's the data)
This is the section the brand blogs won't write, because most of them sell glycinate. The near-universal marketing claim is that glycinate is dramatically more absorbable. Human head-to-head evidence does not support that.
Start with the reference body. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements puts magnesium citrate in the group of forms — alongside lactate, aspartate, and chloride — that are "absorbed more completely and [are] more bioavailable than magnesium oxide and magnesium sulfate."1 Citrate sits in the good absorption tier, not the poor one.
Now the direct comparison. In the best-controlled trial on this question — Walker 2003, a randomized, double-blind study — citrate produced the highest mean serum magnesium of the forms tested, edging out the amino-acid chelate (the glycinate family) and beating magnesium oxide handily.2 Both organic forms clearly outperformed oxide, but between the two organic forms, citrate came out ahead, not behind.
The mechanism lines up. What drives magnesium absorption is solubility and dose, not marketing: organic salts dissolve and absorb better than inorganic ones like oxide,3 and the fraction you absorb falls as the single dose gets larger, regardless of form.4 A 2021 systematic review of magnesium supplement bioavailability found no consistent human evidence that one organic form is meaningfully more bioavailable than another.8
So the honest read is: glycinate and citrate are both well-absorbed organic forms, and absorption is not the reason to pick one over the other. Choose on what the form does once it is in you — which is a gut question, not an uptake question.
Which is better for sleep and anxiety?
For sleep, glycinate is the sensible pick — for two reasons, one modest and one practical. Be honest about the size of the magnesium sleep effect, though. A 2021 meta-analysis of magnesium for insomnia in older adults found people fell asleep about 17 minutes faster than on placebo — but that pooled just two small trials (55 participants for the sleep-onset outcome) and the authors rated the certainty of the evidence as low.5 (The 2021 paper was later formally corrected, and the corrected record still lands in the same place.9) Seventeen minutes is real but not dramatic, and it isn't specific to glycinate — it's magnesium in general. Here citrate wins cleanly, and it isn't close. Citrate is an osmotic laxative: it draws water into the bowel to soften stool and stimulate movement. That is not a supplement-blog extrapolation — magnesium citrate is used as an actual bowel cleanout before colonoscopy, and in a randomized controlled trial a citrate-based prep achieved adequate cleansing in 100% of patients.7 At everyday supplement doses the effect is gentler, and it typically shows up within about 30 minutes to 6 hours.
The flip side is obvious: that same osmotic pull is exactly why citrate is the wrong choice if you don't want a laxative effect. If you're only after repletion or sleep, citrate's gut action is a side effect, not a benefit — which is the whole reason glycinate exists.
Side effects and GI tolerance
Both forms are well tolerated at sensible doses, and both share magnesium's ceiling: take too much and you get diarrhea, sometimes with nausea and cramping. The NIH sets the upper limit for supplemental magnesium at 350 mg per day for adults — that ceiling is about supplements, not the magnesium in food, and going over it is the usual reason for loose stools.1 Adult RDAs, for context, are 400–420 mg for men and 310–320 mg for women, most of which should come from food.1
