Isolate costs more, and nearly every page recommending it sells it. What the digestibility data actually shows, what the training trials don't, and how to compare the two tubs on dollars per gram of protein.

Per-serving rows are read from the two brands' current Supplement Facts panels (Naked Whey 5 lb unflavored; NOW Sports Whey Protein Isolate unflavored), verified 2026-07-25. The concentrate's serving is two scoops; the brand doesn't print its gram weight, so the ~30 g is arithmetic — 5 lb across the 76 servings the brand states. Panels change — check yours. Amino-acid figures on both labels are stated as typical profiles subject to natural variation, not lot-specific assays.

What the two words actually mean

Isolate and concentrate are not two different proteins. They are the same whey, stopped at two different points on the same processing line.

Cheese-making leaves behind liquid whey: mostly water, plus protein, lactose, minerals, and a little milk fat. Concentrate is what you get when you push that liquid through membrane filtration to remove water and some of the non-protein material, then dry it. Isolate is what you get when you keep going — more filtration, usually cross-flow microfiltration with diafiltration, sometimes ion exchange — until nearly everything that isn't protein is gone. Same source, more steps.

Here's the part nobody mentions: "whey protein concentrate" is a defined term in US federal regulation, and "whey protein isolate" isn't. FDA's food regulations specify that whey protein concentrate must contain not less than 25% protein, with a maximum of 60% lactose and 1–10% fat.1 That is an enormous range. A 34% concentrate and an 80% concentrate are both, legally, "whey protein concentrate." Meanwhile a full-text search of the Code of Federal Regulations returns no section for whey protein isolate at all — the term carries no federal compositional standard.1

The practical consequence: the word on the tub tells you less than the panel on the back. A good sports-nutrition concentrate lands around 80% protein by weight; a cheap one can be far lower and still use the same word.

There's a third tier, hydrolysate, which is isolate partially broken into shorter peptides before you drink it. It costs the most of the three and we have not seen a consumer-relevant case made for it; your stomach performs that step for free. Is isolate a higher-quality protein? The measured answer is no.

This is the claim every page on this search rests on, and it is the one nobody has checked.

Protein quality has a modern scoring system: DIAAS, the digestible indispensable amino acid score, which combines a protein's amino-acid profile with how much of each amino acid is actually absorbed in the small intestine. One published dataset has scored whey protein isolate and whey protein concentrate side by side, from Mathai, Liu and Stein at the University of Illinois. On the reference pattern for children over three, adolescents and adults, it scored whey protein concentrate at 133 and whey protein isolate at 125 — both first-limited by histidine.2 The concentrate scored higher.

The digestibility result is even cleaner, and it's the line we'd actually hang this section on. In the authors' words: "With the exception of tyrosine, the SID of all AA was not different between WPI and WPC."2 Standardised ileal digestibility — the real measure of how much of each amino acid you absorb — was statistically the same for the two forms, across the board, with one exception nobody is choosing a tub over.

Now the caveats, because this finding is easy to run too far with.

What this study can and can't tell you

It was a growing-pig model — nine barrows fitted with an ileal cannula in a 9 × 9 Latin square design — not a human trial. Pigs are the accepted model for human ileal digestibility, but they are still a model.2 It scored one commercial sample of each ingredient, not the category, and we've just established that "concentrate" spans a wide compositional range. Both proteins were first-limited by the same amino acid, histidine. Critically, the paper never statistically tests the two scores against each other — the significance tests in that table compare DIAAS against PDCAAS within an ingredient, not isolate against concentrate.2 So "133 beats 125" is a difference in two point estimates, not a demonstrated difference between the products. The paper's headline finding isn't about isolate versus concentrate at all — it's a methodological argument about DIAAS versus PDCAAS. And the scores move with the reference pattern you choose: on the 6-month-to-3-year pattern it's isolate 100 and concentrate 107; on the infant pattern, isolate 67 and concentrate 71.2 Always ask which pattern a DIAAS figure is quoted on.

So we are not going to tell you concentrate is the better protein. Eight DIAAS points between two proteins that both score above 100 is not a difference you will ever notice, and the study wasn't designed to rank them. The defensible conclusion is narrower and more useful: isolate has no demonstrated protein-quality advantage over concentrate. If you are paying extra for "purer" or "higher-quality" protein, you are paying for a claim that the measured data does not support.

One flag, since you'll see it everywhere: figures like "whey isolate DIAAS 1.09" attributed to this paper are not in it. Its whey values are the ones above. If a page quotes a DIAAS number without naming the reference pattern, it hasn't read the source.

What the training trials show

If protein quality doesn't separate them, does anything else? One randomised trial has actually asked. Forbes and Bell assigned 31 participants to a placebo, whey protein isolate, or whey protein concentrate alongside six weeks of concurrent training. Both protein groups ate 3.5 g/kg/day against the placebo group's 1.2. Cardiorespiratory fitness, upper-body strength, lower-body strength and 2,000 m rowing performance all improved — similarly in all three groups, with no differential effect of the protein type.8

One small trial, and what it can't tell you

Six weeks, thirty-one people, roughly ten per arm — nowhere near enough to rule out a modest difference, and short enough that slow-accruing effects wouldn't show. It measured strength and performance, not lean mass; no trial we could find has compared the two forms on muscle mass. And both protein arms were fed 3.5 g/kg/day, roughly double the intake past which extra protein stops adding fat-free mass4 — so the test was run in the condition least likely to reveal a difference between two proteins.

The honest summary is not "proven equivalent." It's that the only head-to-head evidence that exists found nothing, and it points the same way the digestibility data does.

The other relevant body of evidence is a 2019 meta-analysis of whey supplementation in physically active people. It pooled eight randomized trials covering 246 participants, and every single one compared whey to an isocaloric placebo — never to the other form.3 Its results:

  • Fat-free mass: no significant effect. Overall weighted mean difference 0.26 kg (95% CI −0.32 to 0.83; p = 0.381), and the authors state there was no significant effect on fat-free mass in any scenario investigated, including the subgroups split by whey type.3
  • Fat mass: a significant reduction overall, −0.96 kg (95% CI −1.37 to −0.55; p < 0.001). In the stratified analysis, the effect held for the concentrate subgroup: −0.63 kg (95% CI −1.19 to −0.06; p = 0.030). The concentrate subgroup is the one the paper reports as significant.3

Read those honestly and they don't crown a winner — they mostly show how thin the evidence base is. The authors say so themselves: only one of the included trials was rated at low risk of bias, so the body of evidence is of low methodological quality; every participant in the pooled analysis was male; and one hydrolysate study had to be dropped from a subgroup because it was the only one of its kind.3

So the head-to-head evidence is one short trial on strength, and the pooled evidence never compared the forms at all. Anyone telling you isolate is better for building muscle is extrapolating from processing steps — the trial that would demonstrate it, randomising people to one form or the other and measuring lean mass, has not been run.

What does have strong evidence is the thing this whole argument distracts from: total daily protein. Pooling 49 studies and 1,863 participants, protein supplementation stopped adding fat-free mass beyond a total intake of about 1.62 g/kg/day.4 The ISSN's position stand puts the useful range at 1.4–2.0 g/kg/day, with 20–40 g per dose.5 Hitting that number matters enormously. Lactose: the one difference that reliably matters

Strip away the marketing and one real difference remains. Concentrate keeps meaningfully more lactose; isolate keeps very little.

You can see it on the panels. The concentrate we're using as the reference here lists 2 g of sugar and 3 g of total carbohydrate per serving; the isolate lists 0 g of sugar and 1 g of carbohydrate.67 In a powder, that sugar is essentially milk sugar. Two grams sounds trivial — and for most people it is — but if you're lactose intolerant and drinking two shakes a day, it isn't. Naked's own product page says the plainest version of this: their whey "is ideal for those without a lactose sensitivity."6

So: if dairy sugar gives you bloating, gas, or cramping, isolate is worth every cent of the premium. That is the single clearest buy signal on this page. If dairy has never bothered you, the premium is buying you the removal of about two grams of something that wasn't doing you any harm.

One critical distinction, because the two get conflated constantly. Lactose intolerance is not a milk allergy. Intolerance is about digesting the sugar; allergy is an immune reaction to the milk proteins — and both isolate and concentrate are milk proteins. Neither form is a solution for a milk allergy. If that's you, the whole whey category is out and you want pea protein instead. The only comparison that answers "is it worth the extra": dollars per gram of protein

Here's the arithmetic nobody on page one does, and it's the actual question.

Comparing tub prices is meaningless, because the tubs don't hold the same amount of protein and the scoops aren't the same size. The number you want is dollars per gram of protein:

  1. Price ÷ servings per container = price per serving. Servings per container is on the panel, not the front of the tub.
  2. Price per serving ÷ grams of protein per serving = dollars per gram of protein.
  3. Compare that number between the two products. Nothing else.

We're not printing prices — they'd be stale by the time you read this. But run those two divisions on the tubs in front of you and the comparison usually collapses into something obvious.

Here's the step most people miss, and it's a live illustration of why scoops mislead. Look again at the two panels: the concentrate delivers 25 g of protein per serving, which is two scoops totalling about 30 g; the isolate delivers 24 g per serving, which is one level 28 g scoop.67 Per serving, that's essentially the same protein — but "a scoop" means two different things on the two tubs. The premium is not buying you more protein. It's buying the absence of about two grams of fat, two grams of sugar, and ten calories.

Which is a perfectly legitimate thing to buy. On a tight cut at three shakes a day, six grams of fat and six grams of sugar removed daily is exactly the kind of trimming worth paying for. That's the honest case for isolate, and it's a far better one than "higher quality" — it's just smaller than the price gap implies.

What you actually give up by paying more

"Whey protein isolate dangers" is a common search and it deserves a straight answer rather than silence: there is no danger specific to isolate. It's the same milk protein with less of the non-protein material. What you give up is real but modest, and worth naming plainly:

  • The milk fat, and the fat-soluble material that travels with it. Two grams a serving on the panels above.67
  • The minor whey fractions that survive lighter filtration. You will see large claims made for these — immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, glutathione support. We haven't verified that literature and won't repeat those claims as fact. What we can say factually is that heavier filtration removes more of everything that isn't the target protein.
  • Money, which is the real cost and the one nobody wants to talk about.

You'll also see "undenatured" and "cold-processed" sold as selling points on concentrates — Naked, for instance, markets its whey as non-denatured.6 More processing steps mean more opportunity for heat and shear, and that's where the argument comes from. We're describing the claim, not endorsing it: we found no evidence that denaturation level meaningfully changes the outcome you care about, in either direction. Denaturation isn't a synonym for damage, either — your stomach acid denatures protein on contact.

A note on method, since nobody else on this search shows theirs. We're reading labels off an unflavored concentrate and an unflavored isolate on purpose, so the comparison is about processing rather than about flavor systems, sweeteners, and proprietary blends. Even so it isn't perfectly clean: the concentrate's ingredient line is whey protein concentrate, full stop, while the isolate's adds sunflower lecithin at under 1% as a mixing agent.67
