Magnesium in the morning or at night: does the clock matter?
Pick whichever one you'll remember. As of this writing we can find no randomized trial that has compared morning against evening magnesium supplementation in people — not for sleep, not for blood pressure, not for mood. (We searched PubMed for magnesium trials carrying any timing term in the title or abstract; the only randomized comparison of when to take a magnesium supplement is the with-meals-versus-fasting study further down this page.) Every "best time of day" claim you'll read is therefore an inference from mechanism, a restatement of whatever schedule a trial happened to use, or marketing.
Two pieces of real science get recruited to fill that vacuum, and both are worth knowing precisely because they don't say what they're quoted as saying.
The first is that your magnesium levels genuinely do run on a daily cycle. A study that sampled blood every four hours around the clock in 25 adults found a statistically significant circadian rhythm in serum magnesium — but the peak landed at 4:36 p.m. in young men and around 10–11 a.m. in older adults.9 A rhythm whose high point moves by six hours depending on your age is not a schedule you can dose to.
The second is a 2016 Nature paper reporting daily oscillations in magnesium concentration inside cells, in a human cell line and in a single-celled alga.10 It's elegant work about cellular timekeeping. It is not a study of supplements, people, or bedtimes, and it doesn't tell you when to swallow a capsule — which hasn't stopped it from being cited as if it did.
So decide on practical grounds instead. Three things, none of them a chronobiology finding. Magnesium is marketed for sleep, so the pill got shelved next to the bedtime routine. The sleep trials dosed in the evening, so evening became "the studied timing" by circular logic. And glycinate — the form most people buy for sleep — is generally the easiest of the common forms on the gut, which makes a bedtime dose comfortable. When to take magnesium glycinate — and how long before bed
Same answer, with one form-specific wrinkle: glycinate is usually the least likely of the common forms to send you to the bathroom, so it's the one that's genuinely comfortable at night. Now the "30 to 60 minutes before bed" number, which appears on nearly every page about this. It's the dosing interval used in the sleep trials. It was not derived from how quickly magnesium reaches your bloodstream — and the pharmacokinetics point somewhere else entirely. In a randomized study of 24 healthy men given a single oral dose of magnesium oxide, median time to peak serum magnesium was 6 hours at the 750 mg dose and 2 hours at 2,000 mg.3 (Both are large doses — roughly 450 and 1,200 mg of elemental magnesium — and magnesium oxide dissolves slowly, so don't read those exact hours across to a glycinate capsule.)
Take that at face value and half an hour before bed looks arbitrary. But there's a second honest caveat, and it cuts the other way: less than 1% of your body's magnesium is in your blood at all, and serum levels correlate poorly with tissue stores.1 So a blood curve is a weak guide to when magnesium is "working." The defensible conclusion isn't "take it four hours earlier." It's that the precise interval before bed is not the lever anyone claims it is. Somewhere in the half-hour-to-two-hours range, at the same point in your evening routine every night, is fine.
Should you take magnesium with or without food?
With food, if your stomach is at all sensitive — and mostly for comfort rather than chemistry.
Here's the honest state of the evidence, and it's thinner than the confident advice suggests. The only randomized trial to compare with-food against fasted magnesium was a pilot in eight patients — four per arm — with a history of calcium-oxalate kidney stones and high urinary oxalate, taking magnesium on a controlled diet for seven days. The with-meals group showed larger improvements in 24-hour urine chemistry, and the authors recommended with-meals dosing for stone prevention specifically.4 That is a real, relevant finding for that population, and it is four people per group in a specialized clinical context. Anyone extending it to "everyone must take magnesium with food for better absorption" has gone well past what it can carry.
What food you eat it with may matter more than whether you eat. Using stable isotopes in nine adults, fractional magnesium absorption from a meal served with spinach was 26.7%, against 36.5% from the same meal served with kale — the difference attributed to spinach's oxalate content.5 The authors also noted spinach's higher native magnesium probably offsets much of that in practice, so this is not a reason to stop eating spinach. It's a reason to stop treating "with food" as a single setting.
Two more practical notes from the same literature. Magnesium in whole food is not inferior to the supplemental kind — magnesium from almonds proved just as bioavailable as soluble magnesium acetate.2 And enteric-coated magnesium was absorbed much less well than the uncoated salt in the same study,2 which is a formulation choice worth avoiding if a gentle stomach is what you were buying.
Splitting your dose: the one timing change that moves the needle
This is the section with actual leverage, and it's about spacing rather than the clock.
Your gut cannot absorb magnesium at a fixed rate no matter how much arrives. In the classic measurement, subjects ate a standard meal supplemented with 0, 10, 20, 40, or 80 mEq of magnesium acetate — up to roughly 970 mg of magnesium in one sitting. Absorption in absolute terms went up with each increment, but fractional absorption fell progressively from 65% to 11%.2 The bigger the single dose, the smaller the share of it you keep.
A modern pharmacokinetic study points the same way from a different angle: nearly tripling a single magnesium oxide dose produced no proportional rise in peak concentration or total exposure — the extra magnesium largely didn't show up in the blood.3 And the European Commission's Scientific Committee on Food, reviewing the tolerability literature to set magnesium's upper limit, concluded plainly that a given daily dose is better tolerated when divided into several portions.6
So: if you're taking more than roughly 200 mg of elemental magnesium a day, take it as two smaller doses rather than one. You'll absorb proportionally more of it and you're far less likely to trigger the osmotic effect that causes loose stools. Morning and evening is the easy split; breakfast and dinner works just as well. Spacing magnesium from your medications
If any timing advice on this page deserves the word "must," it's this one — and it has nothing to do with mornings or bedtimes. Magnesium binds certain drugs in your gut and stops them being absorbed, which means a badly timed supplement can quietly reduce how well a medication works.

Note the asymmetry in the antibiotic rows — it isn't a typo. That is how ODS publishes the interval: the safe gap is longer when magnesium goes first.1 ODS doesn't say why; the standard explanation is that the mineral is still sitting in your gut waiting to bind the next thing that arrives. Follow the numbers regardless of the reasoning.
Beyond that list, one more interaction has been measured directly. In a three-period crossover study in 13 healthy adults, taking 1 g of magnesium oxide (about 600 mg of elemental magnesium — well above a normal supplemental dose) at the same time as gabapentin lowered the drug's oral bioavailability by 32%.7 That study only tested simultaneous dosing, so it can't tell you what gap would fix it.
Gabapentin's own FDA label can. An antacid containing magnesium and aluminum hydroxides cut gabapentin's bioavailability by about 20%; taking gabapentin at least 2 hours after the antacid narrowed that to about 10%, and the 2-hour gap is the label's standing recommendation.11 That's an antacid rather than a magnesium capsule, so read it as a sensible default, not a tested rule for your supplement — and as a reason to put the question to your pharmacist rather than settle it here.
Two things that look like spacing problems but aren't. Loop and thiazide diuretics increase magnesium loss in urine, while potassium-sparing diuretics reduce it, and long-term proton pump inhibitor use (typically over a year) can cause low magnesium.1 Those are effects on your magnesium status, not gut-level binding — moving your dose by two hours does nothing about them. They're a conversation about whether and how much, which the magnesium hub covers.

What about taking magnesium with zinc, calcium, or other supplements?
Take them together if that's simpler. The "minerals compete, so separate them" rule traces to a real finding stretched past its dose: in the study behind it, 142 mg of zinc a day interfered with magnesium absorption and balance.18 A typical zinc supplement is 15–30 mg, and the tolerable upper limit for adults is 40 mg a day12 — nowhere near the intake that caused the problem. Unless you're taking heroic doses of zinc, this isn't your issue.
Does timing change how fast magnesium works?
No, and this is the reframe that makes the rest of the page easy. If you're supplementing to close a gap in a low intake, you're refilling a body pool that holds around 25 grams of magnesium, more than half of it locked in bone.1 That's a weeks-scale job. A dose taken at 8 a.m. versus 10 p.m. is a rounding error against a dose skipped entirely on Tuesday and Thursday.
Which is why "same time every day" is the only timing instruction on this page that changes outcomes — not because that hour is special, but because attaching the dose to something you already do without thinking is what stops you missing days.
The bottom line
