What's actually in the scoop
Thorne's current label is short, which is a compliment: Magnesium (as Magnesium Bisglycinate) 200 mg, and two other ingredients — citric acid and monk fruit concentrate.1 Sixty servings per container, one scoop each.
That "no magnesium oxide" point deserves more weight than it usually gets. A large share of products sold as magnesium bisglycinate are buffered — the chelate is blended with magnesium oxide so the manufacturer can print a bigger elemental number on a smaller capsule. Oxide is about 60% magnesium by weight16 against bisglycinate's 14%, and it is the poorly absorbed, laxative-leaning form most people switched to glycinate to escape. Thorne's ingredient list has no oxide in it. If you only check one thing on a glycinate label, check that, and this product passes.
The scoop itself is 3.77 g, from a 226.2 g container.2 Magnesium bisglycinate is roughly 14% magnesium by weight,9 so 200 mg of elemental magnesium accounts for about 1.4 g of that scoop — and commercial chelate raw materials usually run leaner than the pure compound, so realistically 1.4–2 g. The remaining half to two-thirds is citric acid and monk fruit. That isn't padding; it's the drink. But it is why a "60-serving" tub weighs half a pound and why a powder costs more per milligram than a capsule.
Thorne's own product page, to its credit, says the quiet part out loud: bisglycinate, glycinate and diglycinate are the same compound, and "bis" simply means two.1 Our magnesium glycinate hub reaches the same conclusion from PubChem's synonym list. If a rival bottle charges you extra for the longer word, that's the whole trick.
We checked the certification at the certifier
The NSF Certified for Sport mark is the single most useful thing on this tub, and it is also the claim most likely to be stale on a retailer listing — so it's the one worth verifying at the source.
NSF's public register lists Thorne® Magnesium Bisglycinate as a certified product: brand Thorne, product form powder, package size 7.98 oz (226.2 g), serving size one scoop (3.77 g), with 19 individually certified lot numbers on the listing.2 That matches the current label exactly. The Amazon listing for this ASIN carries the same 3.77 g serving size and the same two other ingredients, so the panel hasn't drifted between the two — the directions have, and that's the one thing worth knowing before you scoop, below.
Why this matters more than the logo: certification here is granted lot by lot, which is why the register enumerates 19 individual lot numbers rather than simply naming the brand.2 NSF's own description of the programme is specific about what it verifies — that a product contains none of 290 substances banned by major athletic organisations, that the contents actually match what is printed on the label, and that it is manufactured in a GMP facility audited annually.13 Label accuracy is the quiet half of that, and it is the question the supplement industry is worst at answering. Confirming all of it in the register rather than reading a logo off the packaging is the difference between a certification and a claim about one.
One thing the register does not provide is a certificate of analysis, and neither does Thorne. The product page carries no COA, no lot lookup, and no link to batch results; Thorne's quality page describes in-house laboratories, cGMP compliance, and third-party GMP audits by NSF and Australia's TGA instead.12 That is a good manufacturing record, and NSF's per-lot certification is arguably a stronger public artefact than a single posted COA. But if you specifically want to read a lab result for the tub in your hand, this product doesn't give you one. Half a point, gone.
The claim on the label we don't agree with
Thorne describes this as "an optimally absorbed form of magnesium."1 Nearly every glycinate product on the market says some version of that. It is the weakest claim in the category, and our magnesium glycinate hub grades it D — insufficient evidence, for three reasons that have nothing to do with Thorne:
- The NIH's magnesium fact sheet lists the forms with better-documented absorption — aspartate, citrate, lactate, chloride — and glycinate appears nowhere on it.3
- In the randomized trial that put an amino-acid chelate against citrate and oxide in 46 adults, both organic forms beat oxide, but citrate produced the highest serum magnesium acutely and after 60 days.6
- In a 2024 crossover in 40 adults that tested bisglycinate by name, oxide and citrate each produced a significant plasma rise; bisglycinate produced none at any timepoint.7 That study was funded by a competing ingredient maker, so weight it accordingly — but it is still one more comparison the "most absorbable" form failed to win.
The review-level conclusion: the leading academic review of magnesium absorption says flatly that the type of magnesium salt "appears less relevant than is often thought," and which binding form is most bioavailable "remains unclear."8 Bisglycinate is a well-absorbed organic salt. It is not a measured winner, and no product — Thorne's included — can sell you evidence that doesn't exist.
Glycinate's more defensible advantage is tolerability: less unabsorbed magnesium reaching the colon means less of the osmotic loosening that oxide and citrate are known for. Our hub grades that a B — a soft one, because the mechanism is sound but the only direct human comparison is a 12-patient crossover in bowel-resection patients, not healthy adults. If a previous magnesium wrecked your stomach, that is still the switch worth making, and it is a better reason to buy this than absorption.
Sleep: the reason most people buy it
Thorne markets this for restful sleep, and this is the form with the most directly relevant trial, so here's the number rather than the vibe.
In 2025, 155 adults with self-reported poor sleep took magnesium bisglycinate — 250 mg of elemental magnesium plus about 1,523 mg of glycine — or placebo, 30 to 60 minutes before bed for four weeks. Insomnia Severity Index scores fell 3.9 points on magnesium against 2.3 on placebo: a between-group difference of 1.6 points, 95% CI 0.0 to 3.3, p = 0.049, Cohen's d = 0.20.4 Nothing else reached significance — not the second insomnia scale, not sleepiness, not fatigue, not mood. The improvement was concentrated in participants whose dietary magnesium was low to begin with.
The broader literature is the same size. The most-cited meta-analysis — conducted in older adults with insomnia, not the general population — reports falling asleep about 17 minutes faster than placebo, but that figure pools two trials and 55 participants, total sleep time did not improve significantly, and the reviewers called the evidence base "substandard."5 Seventeen minutes is worth something. It is not a sleeping pill, and chronic insomnia is a conversation with a clinician rather than a supplement decision. Two details specific to this product. At 200 mg of elemental magnesium, one scoop is slightly under the 250 mg the trial used — a small mismatch, easily closed with one and a quarter scoops. And it delivers roughly 1.2 g of glycine — about 40% of the 3 g taken before bed in the crossover study glycine's own sleep reputation largely rests on, which had eleven participants.14 Glycine is a plausible part of why people find this form settling at night; you are not getting a glycine sleep dose from a magnesium scoop.
What it costs, and the cheaper thing Thorne sells
This is where the score drops, and it isn't close. Both prices below are Thorne's own list prices, read from its product pages on 27 July 2026 — the powder's1 and the capsules'.11 Prices move; the ratio between them is the durable point.

Same brand, same compound, same factory. The powder costs about 80% more per milligram of magnesium than Thorne's own capsules — $52 buys 12,000 mg of elemental magnesium, $26 buys 10,800 mg. A 200 mg day works out to about 87¢ from the powder against about 48¢ from the capsules, with the caveat that capsules only come in 120 mg steps, so in practice that day is one capsule or two.
Two things genuinely justify part of that premium. The capsules are not in NSF's Certified for Sport register, so if you're subject to drug testing the powder is the one you can defend. And a powder lets you take 100 mg, 200 mg or 250 mg without counting pills, which matters if you're titrating to your gut's tolerance. If neither applies to you, you are paying a large premium for format.

Dosing it sensibly — and one listing discrepancy
One scoop is 200 mg of elemental magnesium. The NIH's tolerable upper intake level for supplemental magnesium is 350 mg/day for adults — it covers supplements and medications, not the magnesium in food, because healthy kidneys clear dietary excess in the urine. Go past it and what you get is diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramping; genuine magnesium toxicity is a separate problem that takes far larger doses.3 One scoop sits comfortably under the ceiling.
Worth knowing: thorne.com's current directions say one scoop daily; the Amazon listing for this ASIN still says "one to two times daily."1 NIH's Dietary Supplement Label Database, which archives printed Supplement Facts panels, records the same once-daily instruction on Thorne's earlier 60-serving package15 — so the retailer listing is the outlier here, not the brand. Two scoops would be 400 mg of supplemental magnesium, over the upper limit. That is not an emergency for a healthy adult with normal kidneys, but it is the dose at which loose stools become likely. Read the directions on the brand's page, not the retailer's.

Safety notes the label leaves out
Thorne's warnings section states that there are "no known adverse interactions or contraindications at publication date."1 That is not the whole picture, and the gap is worth ten seconds of your attention.
The NIH documents several real interactions with magnesium supplements: fluoroquinolone and tetracycline antibiotics and bisphosphonates all bind magnesium in the gut, which reduces how much of the medication you absorb, and long-term proton pump inhibitor use can lower magnesium over time.3 None of these means avoiding magnesium — the fix is spacing the doses by a few hours. But if you take any of them, that's a pharmacist conversation, not something to discover later.

Buy it if you're a drug-tested athlete or in a job with the same rules, and you want a magnesium whose certification you can point to in a register. Buy it if you want to dial a magnesium dose up and down by feel rather than by capsule count. Buy it if a previous magnesium gave you a bad afternoon and you want the gentlest common form from a manufacturer with a clean compliance record — and if the price simply doesn't register for you.
Skip it if cost per milligram is anywhere in your thinking. Thorne's own capsules are the same compound for 24¢ per 100 mg, and generic bisglycinate goes lower still. Skip it if you're buying on the strength of "optimally absorbed" — that's the claim we grade D, and it is the single most oversold line in the magnesium aisle. And skip it if you want something to fix serious insomnia; the honest ceiling here is a small nudge, largest in people who were short on magnesium to begin with.
