There are two honest numbers, and they answer different questions.

Pooled across every protocol studied. A 2024 GRADE-assessed meta-analysis of 143 randomized trials found creatine increased body mass by 0.86 kg (95% CI 0.76 to 0.96) and fat-free mass by 0.82 kg (95% CI 0.57 to 1.06).3 That average is lower because the pool includes low-dose protocols with no loading phase, studies with no training attached, and short trials — the effects were larger where a maintenance dose was combined with resistance training.3
Both numbers are real. Loading changes the speed of the increase, not its destination; take 3–5 g a day instead and the same saturation arrives gradually enough that many people never see a distinct jump. The rest of the spread is you. The timeline: what the scale does, week by week
Nobody gives you the curve, so here it is.
Days 1–7, if you're loading. This is the whole event. Muscle total creatine rises roughly 20% after six days at 20 g/day,5 and the scale moves inside that same window.
Weeks 1–4, at 3–5 g/day. A similar 20% rise takes about 28 days at 3 g/day.5 Same endpoint, gentler slope. Spread across four weeks, a 1–2 kg increase is hard to pick out of normal day-to-day fluctuation at all.
Then it stops. Once your muscles are saturated, the water effect is finished. It does not compound. The longer literature supports this more strongly than most people expect: several five-to-ten-week training studies found no significant increase in total body water by the end, which is why the ISSN's own review concludes creatine may not cause water retention over the long term.1
Months 2–6. Anything the scale does now belongs to your training and your diet. Creatine's contribution past saturation is indirect — more quality reps and more total volume, and whatever lean tissue that buys you over months. Water, fat, or muscle? How to read your own scale
You can usually work out what the number is made of from information you already have. Three tells:
Rate. Body fat only accumulates out of an energy surplus you actually ate. Creatine isn't a macronutrient and a 5 g dose supplies no meaningful food energy, so it can't create that surplus — which means three or four pounds appearing in five days is not physically available as fat for almost anyone. Water has no such constraint. Speed is the strongest single tell.
Timing. A jump in the first week that then flattens is the saturation signature. A slow, steady climb that never plateaus is a diet story, not a creatine story.
What else changed. Creatine is almost never started alone. It usually shows up the same week as a new program, a bulk, a bigger appetite, or more carbohydrate — and carbohydrate binds water too. Before you attribute the number to the powder, check what else moved.
Where it shows up. Water held inside muscle reads as fuller muscle. Fat distributes differently and does not care where you trained. A waist measurement and how your clothes fit separate the two far better than a scale does.
Put together, the two patterns look different on paper. Creatine reads as a step: a few days or a few weeks of movement, then a new flat line that holds while everything else about your training stays the same. A surplus reads as a slope — a smaller weekly increment that keeps going into month two and beyond, usually with a waist measurement moving alongside it. If you want to be able to tell them apart at all, take a weekly average from four or five weigh-ins under the same conditions and compare weeks, not days.
One honest caveat on the "muscle" side. A 2025 randomized trial in 63 adults (5 g/day, lean mass by DXA) found the creatine group gained 0.51 ± 1.79 kg more lean body mass than controls after a 7-day wash-in (p = 0.03) — then both groups gained about 2 kg across 12 weeks of resistance training with no difference between them (p = 0.71).7 The authors read that early bump as creatine's short-term effect on the measurement itself: some of what DXA scores as "lean mass" in the first week is water. It's one trial, its control group took nothing rather than a placebo, and it sits against a much larger literature showing a real fat-free-mass advantage.3 But it's the honest answer to "how much of this is muscle" in week one: less than the scan says.
Will creatine make you look bloated or puffy?
This is the mirror question, and it has a direct answer from a trial that measured the right thing.
Researchers gave 16 men and 16 women in resistance training either creatine (25 g/day for 7 days, then 5 g/day for 21 days) or a sucrose placebo on the same schedule, and measured total body water, extracellular water and intracellular water by deuterium oxide and sodium bromide dilution. The creatine group significantly increased muscle creatine, body mass and total body water — but fluid distribution was not changed.2 The extra water didn't shift the balance between the compartments; it didn't get parked under the skin.
An eight-week training study points the same way. In 27 resistance-trained men, creatine produced greater gains in skeletal muscle mass, total body water and intracellular water than placebo, while extracellular water rose similarly in both groups — and the ratio of skeletal muscle mass to intracellular water didn't change in either group.6 The muscle and the water it holds scaled together.

Does creatine make you fat?
No. The ISSN's misconception review, after working through the trial record across several populations, states it flatly: creatine supplementation does not increase fat mass.1
The more useful correction runs the other way, because half the internet now implies creatine helps you lose fat. It doesn't, and the best-targeted analysis is the one that shows why. Candow and colleagues pooled 12 randomized trials in 266 adults under 50 doing resistance training with creatine or placebo: body fat percentage fell by 1.19% (p = 0.006), but absolute fat mass did not change (−0.18 kg, p = 0.76).4 The broader 143-study meta-analysis lands in the same place, with body fat percentage down 0.28% (95% CI −0.47 to −0.09).3
A percentage is a fraction. Add fat-free mass to the denominator and the percentage drops without a single gram of fat leaving your body. That is almost certainly what these numbers describe. Creatine is a training amplifier, not a fat-loss aid, and any page selling it as the second one is reading a ratio as a result.
Does creatine weight gain go away when you stop?
Yes. In the classic loading study, muscle total creatine that had been driven up about 20% declined once supplementation stopped, and 30 days after cessation the concentration was no different from the pre-supplementation value.5 Worth being precise: that trial measured creatine concentration in muscle, not body weight on a scale. The scale inference follows from the mechanism — the water was there because the creatine was — rather than from anyone being weighed on day 30.
The muscle is a different matter. Tissue you built while training on creatine doesn't wash out with the water; it belongs to the training. What you lose when you stop is the water and the performance edge, on roughly a month-long fade.
Creatine while cutting
The scale bump is a one-time offset, not ongoing gain, so it masks early progress in a deficit without reversing any of it — expect the first two to four weeks of a cut to read flat, then judge the trend after that. Track a weekly average, a waist measurement and photos rather than a daily number. Being straight about the evidence here: there is no randomized trial of creatine during a standard energy deficit in trained adults to point to, so "creatine preserves muscle while cutting" is a plausible extrapolation from the training literature rather than a demonstrated finding, and this page won't state it as one.
The 10-pound case: when it isn't creatine
"Why did I gain 10 pounds after taking creatine?" is one of the most-asked versions of this question, and the answer is almost always that it wasn't creatine — at least not alone.
Creatine's water effect has a ceiling. It stops at saturation, and the documented band is 1–3 kg on an aggressive loading dose.1 A gain well past that, or one that's still climbing in week six, has a different driver. The usual candidates: the calorie surplus that came with the new training block, a jump in carbohydrate intake (glycogen binds water too), sodium and hydration swings, and the ordinary noise any bathroom scale produces between morning and night. None of that is a failure. It's just a different question than the one about the powder.
Who actually needs to care about the extra pounds
Weight-class athletes. Wrestling, combat sports, powerlifting, rowing — a 1–3 kg offset is a genuine logistical problem near a weigh-in, and the timing of when you start or stop matters accordingly.1 That's a scheduling decision, not a safety one.
Almost everyone else. It's cosmetic and it's transient, and it arrives attached to the performance benefit you took creatine for in the first place.
