Across the human trials, rhodiola was given at roughly 200–600 mg a day of a root extract standardized to about 3% rosavins and 1% salidroside, taken in the morning or early afternoon because the herb is activating.11 For exercise the picture flips: the single trial that tested both schedules found that 200 mg taken one hour before training shifted performance slightly, while four weeks of daily 200 mg changed nothing it measured.2
One caveat belongs at the top of a rhodiola dosing page rather than buried at the bottom: NCCIH's current position is that "there isn't enough reliable evidence to determine whether rhodiola or its components are useful for any health-related purpose."1 Our own rhodiola hub grades its best-supported claim a C. Why "500 mg of rhodiola" isn't a dose
Every number below assumes a standardized extract, and that word does most of the work. The trials used extracts specified to roughly 3% rosavins and 1% salidroside — the 2004 exercise study, for instance, used a 200 mg extract "containing 3% rosavin + 1% salidroside."2 Rosavins matter most for identity, because they occur in Rhodiola rosea and not in the cheaper species sometimes sold in its place. A product standardized to salidroside alone tells you very little.
Then there's the gap between label and capsule. A 2026 analysis in PLOS One measured both markers in ten U.S.-market rhodiola products bought on Amazon: two of the seven capsules contained significantly less than advertised — one labeled 3.0% rosavins measured 1.51%, and one labeled 1% measured about 0.19%, roughly five times short — while a third came in at 0.01% rosavins, which the authors read as an unexpectedly low R. rosea extract content.13 Ten products is a small sample, as the authors note. How much rhodiola: the doses that were actually studied
Here is every dose worth knowing, attached to the trial it came from and the thing that trial measured. Read the right-hand column before the middle one.

The general range
A systematic review of the fatigue literature put it cleanly: trials reporting a positive effect on physical performance used 200 mg/day and 680 mg/day, and trials reporting a positive effect on mental fatigue used 100–576 mg/day, with rhodiola-only products running from 50 to 660 mg per capsule and a maximum of 1,500 mg/day anywhere in the literature.11 That's the honest span. The 200–600 mg/day figure everyone quotes summarises the middle of it; it isn't a finding of its own.
Fatigue and stress doses
The best-designed positive trial gave 60 adults with stress-related fatigue four tablets a day of the SHR-5 extract — 576 mg/day — for 28 days, and found improvement over placebo on a burnout scale and three attention measures.5 Both groups improved; the extract group improved more on those specific outcomes.
Now the trial that dosing pages leave out. Forty-eight nursing students on shift work took 364–546 mg/day of a rosavin-standardized extract for 42 days, and the placebo group did significantly better on both fatigue measures.8 The doses cluster tightly across these trials. The results do not — and that pattern predicts your experience better than any milligram number will.
Cognitive and mental-fatigue doses
The night-duty and cadet trials used low, split doses: 170 mg a day for physicians working nights,711 and a single dose of either 370 mg or 555 mg of SHR-5 in 161 military cadets.6 That cadet study is one of the only genuine dose comparisons that exists for rhodiola, and its result argues against escalating: both doses beat placebo, there was no significant difference between them, and the authors noted a possible trend in the psychometric tests favouring the lower dose.6
Exercise doses
Two numbers, pointing different directions. The single-dose finding is 200 mg an hour before exercise.2 The pooled finding comes from a 2025 meta-analysis of 26 randomized trials in 668 participants, whose subgroup analysis reported greater VO2max improvements above 600 mg/day.4 Two caveats belong in the same breath as that second number: the VO2max estimate pooled 11 of the 26 trials, not all of them, and the authors flag heterogeneity as a reason for cautious interpretation.4
Anxiety and weight loss: there is no established dose
For anxiety, the closest thing to a trial randomized 80 mildly anxious people to 2 × 200 mg a day (one tablet before breakfast, one before lunch) or to no treatment at all for 14 days.12 The rhodiola group reported less anxiety and stress — and the authors state plainly that this was not placebo-controlled and that no causal relationship can be determined from it.12 A no-treatment comparison can't separate a herb from expectation. Any confident "rhodiola dose for anxiety" online was not derived from a placebo-controlled study, because there isn't one.
Weight loss is simpler: searching the human literature turns up no rhodiola weight-loss trial at all, so there's no dose to report. Both sit at a D on our hub for exactly these reasons.
Men versus women
The trials did not adjust dose by sex. Populations were mostly mixed — the exercise review that pooled 13 trials counted 198 men and 65 women3 — and no study has compared a dose in men against the same dose in women. There's no evidence-based reason for different numbers.
Is there an upper limit?
No tolerable upper intake level has been set for rhodiola. The practical ceiling is the top of the studied range — roughly 600–680 mg a day in the trials reporting benefit, with 1,500 mg/day the highest dose recorded anywhere in the fatigue literature.11 The one head-to-head comparison found no advantage to the higher arm.6 Past the studied range you're more likely to buy over-activation — restlessness, jitteriness, a wrecked night's sleep — than more effect. When to take rhodiola: morning, night, or before a workout
Morning or early afternoon, and why
Take it early. The reason is not chronobiology — it's that rhodiola is activating, and insomnia sits on NCCIH's list of reported side effects, alongside dizziness, headache, and dry mouth or excess saliva.1 A late dose is the most common reason people report that rhodiola "didn't agree" with them. Where trials split the dose, they split it across the front half of the day: morning and midday.12
What about at night?
There's no evidence for a night dose and a plausible cost to trying one. Nobody has run a bedtime-versus-morning comparison, so the honest answer is that the timing advice rests on a side-effect profile rather than on a trial.
This is the clearest practical difference between the two headline adaptogens. Ashwagandha is commonly taken in the evening — some people find it mildly sedating, which is a feature at night. Before exercise: the timing with the best evidence
A 2004 crossover trial tested both schedules in one design. One hour after a single 200 mg dose, time to exhaustion rose from 16.8 to 17.2 minutes against placebo, with a matching rise in peak oxygen uptake.2 A second phase then had participants take 200 mg daily for four weeks — which "did not alter any of the variables measured."2
Report the size honestly: 0.4 minutes is about 24 seconds on a roughly 17-minute test. Small. The shape is what matters, and a 2023 systematic review of 13 randomized trials found the same shape — acute supplementation helped endurance performance and rating of perceived exertion, chronic supplementation did not help endurance.3 That review also notes most of its included studies carried unclear or high risk of bias, so hold it loosely.3
For performance, then, the useful question isn't morning or night? It's daily habit or targeted dose? — and the evidence, thin as it is, leans toward the targeted dose.
With or without food?
"Take rhodiola on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before breakfast" appears on nearly every page that ranks for this question. We could not find a trial behind it. No study has compared rhodiola taken with food against rhodiola taken fasted — not for absorption, not for effect, not for tolerability. What exists is protocol convention: trials that specified timing instructed morning or pre-meal dosing, such as the anxiety study's "1 tablet taken before breakfast and 1 tablet before lunch"12 and the shift-work trial's dose "at the start of their wakeful period."8 That is how the trials happened to be run. It is not a comparison, and it was never presented as one.
The practical read: dosing before a meal is what the studies did, so it's a defensible default. Nobody has shown it matters. If capsules on an empty stomach make you queasy, take them with food — you're not giving up anything that has ever been measured.
How long until it does anything?
Depends entirely on what you're asking it to do. Acute effects were measured about an hour after a single dose in the exercise work.2 Fatigue and stress trials ran 4 to 12 weeks, with the placebo-controlled stress trial assessing at 28 days.510
Then there's the claim that rhodiola "works within a week," which traces to one study: 100 people with prolonged or chronic fatigue symptoms took 2 × 200 mg of the WS® 1375 extract for 8 weeks, and the largest change was recorded after week 1.9 That trial was uncontrolled and open-label — no placebo group — and it was sponsored by Willmar Schwabe GmbH, the maker of the extract, with one author employed there.9 A big week-one improvement with nobody to compare against is exactly what regression to the mean and expectation look like. The finding may be real; it has never been tested against a placebo.
Practical version: give it the trial length, not a weekend, and decide in advance what "it worked" would look like.
How long should you take it, and does cycling matter?
NCCIH describes rhodiola as possibly safe for up to 12 weeks; past that, nobody has looked.1 Europe's regulator is more conservative: the EMA registered rhodiola root as a traditional-use herbal medicine — a status based on history of use rather than clinical evidence — for "the temporary relief of symptoms of stress, such as fatigue and sensation of weakness," in adults over 18, and says it shouldn't be taken longer than two weeks without medical advice.14
As for "six weeks on, two weeks off," or any other cycling schedule: no trial has compared continuous dosing against a cycled one. It's convention, and saying so beats repeating a number nobody generated. The defensible way to handle an unstudied duration is to treat rhodiola as a time-limited trial rather than a permanent shelf item — roughly what the 12-week ceiling implies anyway.
Running it like an experiment
If you're going to try rhodiola, the way to learn something from it:
- Change one thing. Starting rhodiola, a new sleep schedule, and a training block in the same fortnight teaches you nothing about rhodiola.
- Buy on the standardization, not the milligram count. Look for stated rosavins and salidroside percentages plus third-party testing, for the label-accuracy reasons above.13
- Match the schedule to the goal. Daily dosing over several weeks is what the fatigue and stress trials did; a single dose about an hour before is what the exercise evidence supports.25
- Stay in the studied range — roughly 200–600 mg/day — and don't escalate on the theory that more works better. The one dose comparison found it didn't.6
- Dose in the morning, and move it earlier if your sleep suffers.1
- Write the stop rule before you start. Four to eight weeks with nothing measurably different means it isn't working for you.
