Creapure Creatine: What It Actually Is, and Whether It's Worth Paying For

Creapure is one German plant's creatine monohydrate, sold to brands under a trademark licence — not a patented form. It's measurably cleaner than the retail average, and no trial has ever compared it with generic monohydrate on any outcome.

Creapure is creatine monohydrate made by AlzChem Trostberg GmbH at one dedicated plant in Trostberg, Bavaria, and sold to supplement brands under a trademark licence. Two things about it are true at once, and nearly every page ranking for this question blurs them together. It is the best-documented creatine you can buy: AlzChem's seal guarantees 99.9% purity and every batch is analytically tested before release.3 And there is no evidence it works better, because no trial has ever compared it with generic creatine monohydrate on strength, muscle, or any other outcome. That is not the same as saying the two perform identically — nobody has run that study either. There is not one affiliate link on this page, which is why we can tell you who paid for the evidence on both sides.

The short answer

Creapure is genuinely cleaner than the retail creatine average, and there is no evidence it works better. Those are separate questions and the answer is different for each. On purity: AlzChem guarantees at least 99.9% purity, produces it in one dedicated German facility and tests each batch,3 and independent analysis of 33 retail creatine products found measurable manufacturing contaminants in a meaningful share of them.2 On performance: no trial has compared them. Not one study has tested Creapure against generic creatine monohydrate on strength, lean mass, muscle creatine content, or absorption. Anyone telling you Creapure builds more muscle is guessing, and anyone telling you the two are proven equivalent is guessing in the other direction.

What Creapure actually is

Creapure is creatine monohydrate — the same compound used in the overwhelming majority of creatine research, from one identified source. It is not a fourth form sitting alongside monohydrate, hydrochloride and buffered creatine. It is monohydrate with a brand name and a paper trail.

The manufacturing is ordinary industrial chemistry: acetic acid into an aqueous sodium sarcosinate solution, stirred to about pH 10 at roughly 80 °C, then aqueous cyanamide, and after cooling the crystalline creatine monohydrate is filtered and dried.1 No animal tissue anywhere in that route, which is why monohydrate is vegan by construction whoever makes it.

Two chemistry details matter for what you are buying. Monohydrate holds one water molecule per creatine molecule, so the powder is 87.9% creatine by mass — a 5 g scoop delivers about 4.4 g of creatine, and that is true of every monohydrate on the market.1 And the "anhydrous" creatine sold as more concentrated is dried at higher temperature, which leaves it with more of the impurity creatinine, not less.1

What AlzChem sells on top of the molecule is documentation: a dedicated Trostberg facility, a guaranteed 99.9% purity level, analytical testing of each batch.3 That figure is AlzChem's own, on AlzChem's own quality-seal page, and we are reporting it as the manufacturer guarantee it is.

A trademark, not a patent

You will read constantly that Creapure is a "patented form of creatine." It is not, in either half of that phrase.

There was a patent — US5719319A, filed by SKW Trostberg AG (now AlzChem Trostberg GmbH) in July 1996, granted in February 1998, and expired on 9 July 2016.6 It covered a process, not a molecule: cyanamide reacted with sodium or potassium sarcosinate in water at 20–150 °C and pH 7.0–14.0.6 Anyone may run that chemistry now.

What a brand licences today is the name. That still means something — the trademark attaches to a single plant running a single documented process, which is what a commodity supply chain cannot offer. But it is a licence on a logo, and every page calling Creapure "proprietary" is selling a distinction that lapsed a decade ago.

The purity question, and what independent testing actually found

Creatine's contaminant profile comes from its synthesis. The published contaminant set reported for lower-quality creatine sources includes dicyandiamide, dihydrotriazine, dimethyl sulphate, thiourea, creatinine, and elevated heavy metals such as mercury and lead — attributed to different chemical precursors, poorly controlled synthesis, the use of organic solvents rather than water, and inadequate filtration.1 Creatinine is the odd one out on that list: it is not a synthesis by-product but a degradation product. Creatine turns into creatinine in solution and under high-temperature drying, faster as pH drops and temperature rises.1

One disambiguation, because this word does double duty in the creatine cluster: the creatinine here is a powder impurity, not the blood marker that rises harmlessly on supplementation and gets misread on a kidney panel. Nothing suggests an impure tub skews your labs.

Note what the named mechanism is: process control and solvent choice, not geography. The review above says contaminants have been reported "particularly from China" — a sentence in a paper funded by AlzChem, about AlzChem's competitors, which we are attributing rather than repeating.1 The honest phrasing is low-cost, poorly controlled supply chains.

What one independent lab found in 33 tubs

The only independent, peer-reviewed survey of contaminants in retail creatine we could find is Moret, Prevarin and Tubaro at the University of Udine, in Food Chemistry, 2011. They bought 33 commercial creatine supplements and ran them by liquid chromatography for organic contaminants and mass spectrometry for heavy metals.2 All four findings, including the two that cut against the scare:

  • Creatinine was the major organic contaminant, present above 100 mg/kg in 44% of samples.2
  • About 15% of samples exceeded the 4.5 mg/kg detection limit for dihydro-1,3,5-triazine, with a maximum of 8.0 mg/kg, and carried dicyandiamide above 50 mg/kg.2
  • Thiourea was not detected in any sample.2
  • Of arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead, only mercury was detectable, and at under 1 mg/kg.2

Read the magnitudes, not just the percentages. The dihydrotriazine ceiling was 8.0 milligrams per kilogram — eight parts per million, in the worst tub of 33. The heavy-metal result was essentially a non-finding. The real story is creatinine, a degradation product signalling material that was made or stored badly, in nearly half of what was on the shelf. That is a quality problem worth caring about. It is not a poisoning.

Then the limitation, which we would rather state than have you find: that study is from 2011 and it tested 33 products. Searching Europe PMC in August 2026, we found no successor — no one appears to have gone back to the shelf and re-measured how common these contaminants are. Newer analytical work on commercial creatine does exist, but it asks different questions: a 2025 study characterised how creatine degrades under heat, UV light, pH shifts and being mixed into coffee, orange juice or an energy drink,8 and a 2025 method paper that quantified creatine in commercial sports supplements found deviations from label claims of up to +66%.9 Both are useful; neither is a contamination survey. So the independent picture of how clean retail creatine actually is still rests on one fifteen-year-old paper on 33 tubs — which is thin, and is the reason a manufacturer's own batch testing carries any weight here at all.

Who paid for the evidence that Creapure is clean

The paper everyone cites to establish that Creapure is contaminant-free is a 2022 critical review in Nutrients by Kreider, Jäger and Purpura. It states that creatine monohydrate manufactured using water as solvent in Germany "has produced 99.9% pure CrM with no contaminants under the brand name Creapure®," and calls AlzChem's material the gold standard of creatine.1 We have leaned on it throughout this page. Here is what its own funding and conflicts sections say.

The article processing charges for that special issue were funded by Alzchem, LLC of Trostberg, Germany — the company that manufactures creatine monohydrate.1 Two of the three authors filed creatine patents while employed by SKW Trostberg/Degussa AG, now AlzChem, from 1999 to 2007.1 The first author is acting Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board on Creatine for Alzchem.1 None of that is hidden — it is printed in the paper. It is simply never mentioned by the pages citing it.

So why do we still accept the chemistry? Because an independent Italian lab found exactly the compounds that review names — creatinine, dicyandiamide, triazines — in product bought off the shelf.2 The financial conflict is real, and you should discount the superlatives accordingly: "gold standard" is a marketing sentence in a scientific paper. The underlying process chemistry stands on its own.

Does it work better, or is it just cleaner?

Just cleaner — and the best evidence for that is how Creapure appears in the research literature.

Across the trials that name it, Creapure is the reference material, never the experimental variable. In a 2012 trial comparing buffered creatine with monohydrate, the monohydrate arm is specified as "CrM (Creapure® AlzChem AG, Trostberg, Germany)" — the yardstick the test product was measured against.5 Two decades of creatine research has used Creapure as its standard and never once asked whether the standard beats a generic tub. That study does not exist. We looked for it.

AlzChem does not claim otherwise either. Its consumer-facing quality-seal page sells purity, a single production site, batch testing and doping-substance screening — not superior performance.3 The performance claim attached to creatine in Europe is the generic regulatory one, that supplemental creatine increases physical performance in short-duration, high-intensity exercise,1 which any monohydrate can make. A manufacturer with every commercial reason to claim its product outperforms the competition declines to.

The bridge you can draw is chemistry, not a trial result: a 99.9%-pure batch and a 97%-pure batch deliver the same molecule to the same transporter. The difference is what rides along with it and how much creatine you get per scoop. That is a statement about what you are swallowing, not about what happens afterwards.

The same logic kills the most common Creapure sales pitch. There is no evidence it causes less bloating or stomach upset than generic monohydrate, because no trial has compared them on digestive tolerance; the levers that do reliably reduce it are dose-related and covered in creatine side effects.

A licence and a certification answer different questions

This is the distinction nobody selling Creapure draws, and it is the most useful thing on this page.

A Creapure licence tells you what the raw material is and where it was made. AlzChem's seal covers purity, the Trostberg facility and batch analysis, and notes the material is listed on the Cologne List®, meaning it has been tested for selected doping substances by a globally recognised laboratory.3 Read that word "selected" — and note that the programme says the same thing about itself, more bluntly than we would. In its own guidance to athletes, the Cologne List states that publication of a product "does not mean that a product is basically free of doping substances. It only means that the doping risk is significantly minimized," that 100% security is "not possible for procedural reasons," and that "the assessment of the doping risk always lies with the athlete him/herself."10 That is the certifier describing its own limits. Screening a raw material against a defined panel reduces risk; it is not a warranty that a finished product contains nothing prohibited.

NSF Certified for Sport and Informed Sport certify the finished product, lot by lot — the tub you actually bought, after the blender has scooped, mixed, flavoured and packed it. A licensed raw material says nothing about what happened in that facility afterwards. If you are drug-tested, that is the certification you need, and a Creapure logo is not a substitute for it. The two are not in conflict — a product can carry both, and that combination is the strongest assurance available. But if you are choosing which logo to pay for, the finished-product certification does more work.

How to tell if it's really Creapure

AlzChem does not publish a list of the brands it licenses. Its own page for manufacturers and resellers describes the trademark licence agreement and invites companies to get in touch; it names no licensees.4 Every "110+ verified Creapure brands" article you find is therefore somebody's compilation, usually an affiliate one, and unverifiable by construction.

The check that works is on the seal itself. Each Creapure quality seal carries a six-digit QS code at the bottom left, which you enter at creapure.com to confirm the product is in AlzChem's partner network.3 Thirty seconds, direct from the source — the same move as looking a product up in a certifier's own register instead of trusting a badge in a product photo.

Do it on the tub in front of you, because brands reformulate and the internet does not keep up. The brand's own page says so — "we no longer source our Creatine from Creapure®" — and describes a replacement made to an in-house specification in a pharmaceutical facility, in powders from 16 June 2026.7 Listicles across page one still file Momentous under Creapure brands. We still recommend it elsewhere on this site, because it is NSF Certified for Sport, which by the argument above is the assurance that matters more — but the Creapure claim attached to it is stale, and had we built this page on a brand list instead of a verification method, we would have published that error ourselves.

Who should actually pay for it

Our position, plainly: for most people a well-chosen, third-party-tested creatine monohydrate is the rational default, and Creapure is a reasonable premium if a documented single-origin raw material is worth the difference to you. It is not a rip-off and it is not a performance upgrade.

Three cases where it genuinely earns the money:

  • You are buying from an unfamiliar or unbranded supply chain. A cheap white-label tub with no certification and no traceability is exactly the category Moret's lab found problems in.2 Creapure removes that unknown.
  • You want traceability you can verify yourself. One plant, one documented process, a QS code you can check.3 Little else in this category offers that.
  • You have had unexplained tolerance problems with a cheap product and want to eliminate the raw material as a variable before deciding creatine doesn't agree with you. That is troubleshooting, and the swap is untested, so it may tell you nothing.

And the case where it does not: you already buy an NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport product. That is lot-by-lot testing on the finished tub, and a Creapure logo on top of it buys very little. Cost enters this decision only because creatine is a daily habit — 3–5 g a day, for years, is a lot of scoops — so a per-serving premium compounds in a way a one-off purchase would not.

Creapure is one German plant's creatine monohydrate, sold under a trademark licence that replaced an expired process patent.6 The purity documentation behind it is the best in the category, and the retail market it is priced against does have a real contamination problem — mostly creatinine, in 44% of one 33-product sample, fifteen years ago.2 Nobody has ever tested whether it works better than a good generic, so nobody can tell you it does. Buy it if traceability is worth the premium to you; buy a finished-product-certified monohydrate if you are drug-tested; check the QS code either way.
