What Does "NSF Certified" Mean on a Supplement?

NSF Certified is not one thing. NSF/ANSI 173 certifies that what is on the label is in the bottle; NSF Certified for Sport adds a screen for 290 banned substances. Which one a product holds — and how to check the register yourself in two minutes.

Quick answers

It means NSF tested the product against NSF/ANSI 173, the American National Standard for dietary supplement ingredients. Certification covers three things: a label claim review confirming the contents match the label, a toxicology review of the added ingredients, and a contaminant review for undeclared ingredients and unacceptable contaminant levels.

"NSF Certified" means NSF tested the product against NSF/ANSI 173 — the American National Standard for dietary supplement ingredients — and confirmed that what the label says is what the bottle contains. It is a claim about identity and purity, not about whether the supplement does anything.

The complication, and the reason this page exists: NSF runs more than one supplement programme, and a bottle saying "NSF Certified" is not telling you which one it holds. That distinction is the difference between "the contents match the label" and "this has been screened for banned substances." Here is how to tell them apart, and how to check any claim yourself in about two minutes.

The two programmes

NSF/ANSI 173 is the base certification and, by NSF's description, "the only American National Standard that establishes requirements for the ingredients in dietary and nutritional supplements." Certification has three components:1

  • Label claim review — confirming that what is on the label is in the bottle
  • Toxicology review — assessing the safety of intentionally added ingredients
  • Contaminant review — confirming there are no undeclared ingredients or unacceptable levels of contaminants

NSF Certified for Sport sits on top of that. In NSF's own words, "in addition to certification under NSF/ANSI 173, supplements specifically intended for use by athletes are evaluated to NSF Certified for Sport."1 The programme's own site puts the added screen at 290 substances banned by major athletic organisations — stimulants, narcotics, steroids, diuretics, beta-2-agonists and masking agents — tested lot by lot rather than once at certification.6

A note on that number, because it is the kind of detail that ages badly: NSF's general consumer page still says 280, while the Certified for Sport programme site says 290 in two places. We use the programme's own figure. If you see 280 quoted elsewhere, that is the older number, not a different programme.

As for who stands behind it, NSF distinguishes two things that get blurred in marketing copy. It names the United States Anti-Doping Agency, Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League and the Canadian Football League as recognising the certification, and the NFL, NBA, PGA, LPGA, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport and others as recommending it.6 Neither is an endorsement of any particular bottle.

So the relationship is nested: every Certified for Sport product also meets NSF/ANSI 173, but most NSF-certified products are not Certified for Sport. If you are a drug-tested athlete, only the second one answers your question.

Why the difference is not academic

The gap between the two programmes is where the marketing lives. A brand certified under NSF/ANSI 173 can put NSF's mark on a bottle, and a shopper who has heard "look for NSF" reasonably reads that as the banned-substance assurance. It is not.

And certification is granted product by product, not brand by brand — in fact, package by package. Searching the Certified for Sport register for "Thorne" on 27 July 2026 returned many separate certified listings, and Thorne's magnesium bisglycinate appeared more than once — package sizes are listed individually, each with its own entry and its own list of covered lots.2 A company can hold dozens of certifications while a different product — or a different size of the same product — has never been submitted. "This brand does NSF certification" and "this bottle is Certified for Sport" are different statements, and the label rarely distinguishes them.

How to check the register yourself

Both registers are public and free.

  1. Decide which claim you are checking. If the label just says "NSF Certified," use NSF's dietary supplement listings at info.nsf.org.3 If it shows the Certified for Sport mark, use nsfsport.com.2
  2. Search one word, not the whole product name. This is the step that trips people up. NSF's keyword search matches the phrase you type, so "Thorne Magnesium Bisglycinate" returned no results on 27 July 2026 while a search for "Thorne" returned that exact product.2 Search the brand, then read down the list.
  3. Open the listing and read it. A Certified for Sport entry names the product form, package size, serving size and — the detail most people miss — the specific lot numbers covered. The register entry for Thorne's magnesium bisglycinate powder (listing 1507934), checked on 27 July 2026, names the 7.98 oz (226.2 g) package, a 3.77 g serving, and 19 specific lot numbers.2
  4. Absence is only evidence once you have searched properly. If the brand search returns nothing at all under that programme, the mark is not supported. But a blank result from a long multi-word query means nothing, and a product missing from one certifier's register may be listed with another — Informed Sport and Informed Choice keep their own.

Certification marks can be printed by anyone; register entries cannot. That is the whole payoff — provided you have actually looked in the right place before concluding a product is uncertified.

What NSF certification does not tell you

It does not tell you the supplement works. NSF verifies contents and contaminants; it does not evaluate whether the ingredient has clinical evidence behind it, and it does not set a minimum effective dose. A product can be immaculately certified and still contain a dose too small to matter — which is why we grade creatine, magnesium and everything else on the evidence separately from the quality mark.

It also does not make certification a legal requirement. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, FDA "does not have the authority to approve dietary supplements before they are marketed," and the agency's own answer to whether it routinely analyses supplement contents is a flat "No."4 That vacuum is exactly why voluntary certification is worth something — and why the products with the most to hide are the least likely to seek it. Analysis of FDA warnings from 2007 through 2016 identified 776 adulterated supplements containing unapproved pharmaceutical ingredients, across 146 companies, concentrated in sexual enhancement (45.5%), weight loss (40.9%) and muscle building (11.9%) products.5
