Quick answers
The nutrient is enclosed inside liposomes — tiny artificial vesicles built from lecithin or other lipids, the same delivery technology used in some pharmaceuticals. The intent is to protect the ingredient through the gut and improve how much of it crosses into the blood.
"Liposomal" means the active ingredient is packaged inside liposomes — microscopic bubbles made of the same kind of fatty molecules your cell membranes are built from — rather than sitting loose in a capsule or powder. The technology is real and borrowed from pharmaceuticals. The question worth asking is not whether liposomes exist, but whether wrapping your supplement in them changes anything you would notice.
What a liposome is
The National Library of Medicine defines liposomes as "artificial, single or multilaminar vesicles (made from lecithins or other lipids) that are used for the delivery of a variety of biological molecules or molecular complexes to cells."1 A water-soluble nutrient sits in the watery core; the lipid shell is supposed to shield it from stomach acid and digestive enzymes and then merge with the cells lining your intestine, delivering the cargo across.
That mechanism is well established in drug delivery, where liposomal formulations of injected medicines are long-standing practice. Applying it to an oral supplement is a different and much less studied proposition.
What the human evidence shows
Liposomal vitamin C has the most data, and a 2025 scoping review is the cleanest summary of it. Screening 321 studies, the reviewer found 10 human studies comparing liposomal against non-liposomal ascorbate — seven randomised crossovers, one parallel-group trial and two non-randomised.2
Moderate evidenceFor raising blood levels of vitamin C specifically, the signal is fairly consistent. Nine of the ten studies showed higher bioavailability from the liposomal form: peak concentrations 1.2 to 5.4 times higher and total exposure 1.3 to 7.2 times higher.2 Seven were randomised crossovers, one a parallel-group trial and two non-randomised — the right designs for a pharmacokinetic question, but small ones.2 This grade covers liposomal vitamin C and does not transfer to other liposomal products. That is a wide range, and the reviewer's caution is the important part — the studies used "vastly different liposomal formulations," doses spanning 0.15 to 10 g and sampling windows of 4 to 24 hours, "thereby making it difficult to directly compare the studies."2
Insufficient evidenceFor producing a benefit you would notice, the evidence is essentially absent. In those same ten studies, only two assessed any potential biological effect, and only two measured cellular uptake. None measured how much of the extra vitamin C was subsequently excreted — so it is genuinely unknown whether a higher plasma curve means more vitamin C retained or simply more passing through on its way to your urine.2 A separate 2025 systematic review of alternative vitamin C forms in healthy adults reached the same wall from another direction: "no study reported retention in tissues."3
That gap matters more for vitamin C than it would for most nutrients, because the body already caps what it will hold. NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements notes that oral vitamin C "produces tissue and plasma concentrations that the body tightly controls" — absorption drops below 50% at doses above 1 g/day, cells "appear to be saturated" at intakes of 100 mg or more, and above 200 mg plasma rises "only marginally."4 Beating a ceiling the body is actively defending is not obviously useful.
Glutathione is the more interesting case, because ordinary oral glutathione is poorly absorbed, so there is more room for a delivery system to matter. A one-month pilot in 12 healthy adults taking liposomal glutathione at 500 or 1,000 mg/day reported whole-blood glutathione up 40% and levels in immune cells up 100% at two weeks, alongside changes in oxidative-stress and immune markers.5 Take it for what it is: a small, unblinded pilot with no placebo group, measuring biomarkers rather than health outcomes.
Nobody defines the word
There is no standard for what fraction of a product must actually be encapsulated, what size the vesicles should be, or whether they survive manufacture. FDA does not have authority to clear supplements before marketing and "generally does not approve dietary supplement claims or other labeling before use."6 So "liposomal" on a bottle is a manufacturer's description of its own formulation, unverified by anyone.
It is also spreading past the ingredients that were studied. NIH's Dietary Supplement Label Database lists liposomal magnesium and liposomal vitamin D products,7 neither of which has the human comparison data that vitamin C has. If you are buying magnesium or vitamin D, the form questions that actually have evidence behind them are covered on those hubs — and the ordinary forms are cheap.
The practical read
Liposomal delivery is a genuine technology with a real pharmacokinetic effect and an unproven clinical one. If a liposomal version costs a little more and you want it, that is a defensible small bet. If it costs three times as much, you are paying a large premium for a plasma curve rather than a result.
