Quick answers
It means the mineral ion is held by an organic molecule — usually an amino acid such as glycine — at two or more points, forming a ring. Magnesium bisglycinate and zinc bisglycinate are the common examples. The word describes how the mineral is bonded, not how well you absorb it.
"Chelated" means the mineral is chemically bonded to an organic carrier — almost always an amino acid — instead of being sold as a simple inorganic salt. That is the whole definition. It describes how the atoms are arranged, and by itself it tells you nothing about how much of the mineral reaches your blood.
The word is doing marketing work that the chemistry does not support. Below is what the bond actually is, why no agency polices the term, and what the human trials found when they compared chelates head-to-head against ordinary salts.
The chemistry, briefly
A chelate is a metal ion gripped by a single molecule at two or more points, so the carrier wraps around the mineral in a ring rather than simply sitting next to it. The Greek root is chēlē, a crab's claw, which is a fair picture of it.
Magnesium bisglycinate is the archetype: one magnesium ion held by two molecules of the amino acid glycine, formula C₄H₈MgN₂O₄, molecular weight 172.42.1 Zinc bisglycinate and ferrous (iron) bisglycinate follow the same pattern with a different metal in the middle.
The hypothesis behind the marketing is that the intact ring survives the stomach and gets absorbed whole through the small intestine's peptide transport route, bypassing the competition that free mineral ions face. It is a reasonable hypothesis. It is also still a hypothesis — the 1994 study everyone traces the claim back to described its own finding as data that "support the suggestion" that some fraction is absorbed intact, probably via a dipeptide pathway.2
One consequence of the ring matters more than the transport question: the carrier is heavy. Magnesium is only about 14% of magnesium bisglycinate by weight,1 so a 500 mg capsule of the compound holds roughly 70 mg of actual magnesium. The number that counts is the elemental one on the Supplement Facts panel, not the compound weight on the front of the bottle.
Nobody is checking the word
There is no regulatory threshold a product must clear before printing "chelated." Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, FDA does not have the authority to clear dietary supplements before they are marketed, and the agency states plainly that it "generally does not approve dietary supplement claims or other labeling before use."3 A search of NIH's Dietary Supplement Label Database returns over 2,600 label records using the word.4
So "chelated" is a term of art borrowed from chemistry, not a certification. When a label names the actual ligand — bisglycinate, glycinate, picolinate — you can look up what was studied. When it says only "chelated minerals," you cannot.
What the trials found, mineral by mineral
This is where the blanket claim falls apart. Chelation helps for some minerals and not others, and the direction is not predictable from the chemistry.
Zinc: a point for the chelate. In a randomized crossover in 12 healthy women, a single 15 mg dose of zinc bisglycinate raised oral bioavailability 43.4% above zinc gluconate.5 That is a real result. Read it next to the 2024 narrative review that surveyed the clinical comparisons and concluded that "zinc glycinate and zinc gluconate are better absorbed than other forms of zinc"6 — the chelate is in the top tier, sharing it with an ordinary organic salt. Magnesium: a point against. In a 60-day randomized, double-blind trial in 46 adults, magnesium citrate produced a higher mean serum magnesium than an amino-acid chelate after both a single dose (p = 0.026) and chronic supplementation (p = 0.006).7 The 1994 chelate-versus-oxide crossover found no absorption difference across its 12 patients as a whole — 23.5% for the chelate against 22.8% for oxide — though the chelate did win in the four patients who absorbed oxide worst (23.5% vs 11.8%, p < .05) and was better tolerated by everyone.2 And the review that surveyed the field found that the bioavailability edge organic magnesium salts hold is "less relevant than it is often thought to be," because magnesium "cannot be stored but only retained for current needs" and higher absorption is usually followed by higher excretion; it concluded that "it remains unclear which Mg²⁺ binding form produces the highest bioavailability."8 Magnesium bisglycinate has one genuine advantage over magnesium oxide — it is gentler on the gut — and we work through the evidence for it on the magnesium glycinate hub and in the glycinate vs. citrate comparison.
The honest summary: chelation is a legitimate formulation choice with a plausible mechanism and mixed results. Treat "chelated" the way you would treat "extended-release" — a description of the delivery, worth knowing, never sufficient on its own.
What to check instead
- The elemental amount. Find "Magnesium (as magnesium bisglycinate) … mg" on the Supplement Facts panel. That figure, not the compound weight, is your dose.
- The named ligand. "Bisglycinate" is checkable. "Chelated mineral complex" is not.
- Whether the form was blended. Buffered chelates are cut with cheap magnesium oxide to raise the elemental number per capsule — legitimate, but it partly undoes the reason you bought a chelate. It shows up in the ingredient list.
- Third-party testing. The one label signal that is independently verifiable, because a certifier publishes a register you can search. Start with what third-party tested actually means and what NSF certified means.
